College Placement Testing
(CPT)
Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the placement test?

This test is designed to help you by providing information about your skills in the English language, including reading, and in mathematics. Your test results will be used in the academic advising process to help place you into proper levels of English (communication/humanities), reading, and mathematics courses. Your success in college is important to us, and correctly placing you in these courses will help you attain this success.

Who must take the test?

New degree-seeking students, and returning students who change to degree seeking status as well as non-degree seeking students who wish to enroll in an English, a reading, a mathematics course, or any course requiring college level English or Math as a prerequisite.

Who is not required to take the test?

Students who have completed English (college prep or composition) and/or math (college prep or higher) with a grade of C or higher, and have had official transcripts evaluated by FKCC.

New degree-seeking students who can provide official ACT, SAT, or CPT scores two years current.

Returning and non-degree seeking students who can provide official ACT, SAT, MAPS, ASSET or CPT scores two years current.

When and where the test is given?

The test is offered in small group sessions prior to and during registration each term. Students may be tested at any FKCC Campus -- Key West, Marathon, or Coral Shores. For information regarding test dates and times, call 296-9081 ext, 196 (Key West), 743-2133 (Marathon), or 852-2737 (Coral Shores).

What are the requirements for testing?

If you have never taken credit courses at FKCC, you must complete an application for admission and pay a $20 processing fee. The application must be submitted and the fee paid prior to testing.

What are the subtests included in the CPT?

The four required subtests are:
Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills, Arithmetic, and Elementary Algebra

Can I retake the CPT?

Placement test scores are valid for two years.  If you have not used those test scores for course placement during that time period, you will be required to take the test again.

A student must wait until at least 45 days have elapsed before retesting on the CPT.  Instructor recommendation is suggested.

Students who have already begun any level of college preparatory instruction in a subject area may only be referred for retesting on an individual basis by the teaching faculty member.

After a two-year time period, students may retake the test.

A counselor/advisor may grant permission for a retest due to extenuating circumstances.
