The Financial Aid Process

1) Complete the 2007-2008 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after January 1, 2007. You may complete the FAFSA electronically on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov . (Make sure that you are on the government website as there is no charge to complete this application.) The federal processor typically takes 5-7 business days to process the application. It is imperative that you place the Florida Keys Community College Title IV Code -- 001485 -- in the appropriate space indicated on the FAFSA. This will ensure that FKCC receives your processed information in a timely fashion. You should complete your 2005 federal tax return before completing the FAFSA. If you need assistance, please call us at (305) 809-3260.

2) Once your FAFSA form has been completed and you have allowed 3-4 weeks for federal processing, contact the Financial Aid office to verify that your file has been imported and to see if there are any further requirements to be filled.

3) The United States Department of Education may select your financial aid application for a process called "verification." If this occurs, we will ask that additional financial documents be submitted to our office. Requested documents may include the 2006 tax returns of parents and/or students (if the student is classified as a dependent student) or the 2005 tax returns of student and/or spouse (if the student is independent), W2s, and/or any other documents that may be necessary to verify the accuracy of the information provided on the FAFSA.

4) Complete the Florida Financial Aid application ( www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org ). This will pre-approve a student for the receipt of the Florida Student Assistance grant and other state grants (if qualified and funding is available).

5) Student should explore local financial sources with high school and community organizations.

6) Check with the Financial Aid office to see what scholarship opportunities are available.

7) Students interested in a Stafford (Subsidized and Unsubsidized) or Parent PLUS loan should download the Loan Instruction Sheet in the " Forms to Download " section for information on applying for these loans.
