“Welcome to the beautiful Florida Keys,” was the catch phrase in the administrative offices at Florida Keys Community College last week. College President Dr. Jill Landesberg-Boyle welcomed two new key members of her executive administrative staff Monday morning: a provost and a vice president.
Dr. John Kehoe, formerly with Louisiana 's University System, was hired as the new Vice President of VP Finance and Administrative Services, and Dr. Chuck Shaffer, of Islamorada who has been an FKCC Professor of Biology, for the last 10 years, was named Provost. Both new staff members were hired to help the College continue driving forward and maximizing opportunities for what Dr. Boyle sees as “Bringing the institution to its full potential.”
The positions are part of an organizational realignment of the college's existing workforce, a move the President sees as a more efficient use of money and resources. The new Provost position will oversee the instructional department and act as chief academic affairs officer.
“Dr. Shaffer is a shining example of the extremely talented educators we have here in the Florida Keys,” said Dr. Boyle. Shaffer received his Doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania ; an Ivy League school located in Philadelphia and considered one of the country's premier educational institutions. Dr. Shaffer work as a post-doctoral fellow and scholar in experimental medicine with the University of Pennsylvania where he was heavily involved in before moving to the Upper Keys.
Also joining the ranks and taking charge in his new role as Vice President of Business Affairs is Dr. John Kehoe. Stating that he was “overwhelmed by the community's positive spirit toward FKCC and opportunities ahead for the college,” Dr. Kehoe is excited about the future.
Dr. Kehoe received his Bachelor of Science degree from Seton Hall University in New Jersey , a Masters in Education from Boston University and a Doctoral degree in Education from Penn State University . As Chief Business officer for Louisiana 's University System, Kehoe oversaw eight universities. He was also the Director of Strategic Planning and Institutional Research at the Pennsylvania College of Technology. “Couple that educational background with the professional experience that John brings to the table, and it's a pretty impressive package” commented Dr. Boyle.
FKCC is enjoying a second semester of increased enrollment of full time equivalent students after nearly a decade of declining numbers. The College is continuing to enroll students for the spring semester at the main campus on College Road in Key West, Centers in Marathon and Coral Shores as well as online @ www.fkcc.edu .
