FKCC HOSTS GREEN SEMINAR AND CLEAN UP

Key West , FL- On Saturday November 3 rd , Florida Keys Community College (FKCC) hosted its second in a series of monthly Green Seminars at its main campus in Key West campus. Community members, college staff and students have been attending green living demonstrations on the bay side of campus at the Clark Maxwell Jr. Marine Environmental Center to assist in the renovation of the area damaged during Hurricane Wilma. The goal is to rebuild the area to allow it to be powered by Green energy.

FKCC instructors Mark Woods and Bill Trantham displayed a 5KW Diesel Generator running on UCO (used cooking oil) from the Campus Cafeteria, and the College launched the inaugural voyage of the FKCC "Salad Sailor", a cabin cruiser that Woods salvaged and repaired with his students to seaworthiness and then retrofitted the motor to run on the bio-fuel UCO (used cooking oil). “This boat can sail anywhere in the world using the filtered used cooking oil of a restaurant!” exclaimed Woods.

Attendees of the event were treated to short cruises on the "Salad Sailor" which offered a spectacular view of the FKCC campus from the water. The only complaint about the sea trials of the "Salad Sailor' was that the smell of French fries from the vessel's exhaust made some travelers hungry."A bit less offensive than traditional diesel, with a much smaller carbon impact on the environment," commented Professor Trantham.

An added attraction included Professor Roland Fisch lecture, demonstration and introduction to the plants and animals of the Everglades, which students will see in a subsequent tour to the National Everglades Park , utilizing the plants and animals at the center.

Along with demonstrations by FKCC staffers, the people enjoying the afternoon event heard from Doug Gregory of GLEE (Green Living and Energy Education) who explained the role of GLEE and their efforts throughout the Florida Keys in Green Energy education.

Instructors Wood and Trantham are driving the college's new green initiatives and plan monthly seminars on "Green Living" in the Maxwell Clark Center . A list of up coming events will be released in the very near future and posted online at fkcc.edu under the "News and Events" link.

High school students, Charles Swift and Daniel Delice, who participate in a cooperative program in environmental education, joined students from FKCC's Environmental Biology class Natacha Phillipi, Izabela Mandziuk and James Laney to assist in the cleanup.

Corporate assistance for the day's activities was provided by US Harbor Services Inc., which provided vessels to serve as a safety during the shakedown cruise of the "Salad Sailor'. Boston Brick of Key West provided their Hummer 3 replica as a live demonstration of electric cars.

Also in attendance was Dr. Jill Landesberg-Boyle President of FKCC, Vincent Boyle and their two children along with Douglas Gregory, Director of the University of Florida Extension Service and Bryan Foster of Sea Air Land
